E.L. Smith Road

Description

This roadway accesses the E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant. The plant and the road were named after Eugene Lloyd Smith (1902-1960), the first water treatment chemical engineer in Edmonton. He was a pioneer in several treatment processes and was considered the leading authority on water treatment methods in western Canada. Smith was born in Nova Scotia and moved with his family to the Edmonton area in 1919. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1930 and, beginning in 1935, Smith was employed in a city water treatment plant. Under his supervision, the facility was upgraded and its capacity tripled.
