Description
George Francis Hustler (1882-1958), an ordained minister and WWI veteran, was the principal of Bennett School from 1924 to 1945. Hustler was born in England and came to Edmonton in 1909. He founded the Cloverdale Community League and in 1961 was inducted into Edmonton’s Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his coaching of local sports teams. The Bennett School Alumni spoke affectionately of him on the 75th anniversary reunion of Bennett School in 1988. At that time they committed themselves to creating a suitable monument in his memory. The Bennett School, located at 9703-94 Street, was closed in 1973. In 1981 the Edmonton Public School Board reopened the facility as the Bennett Environmental Education Centre. The George F. Hustler Memorial Plaza has an area of 0.76 ha.
