Manning Drive

Description

Ernest C. Manning (1908-1996) was the premier of Alberta from 1943 to 1968, serving for a record seven terms. He was born in Saskatchewan and came to Alberta in 1927. In 1935 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly and appointed a cabinet minister in the Social Credit government led by William Aberhart. Following Aberhart’s death in 1943, Manning became leader of the Social Credit Party and premier. After his retirement, Manning was appointed a senator. In 1981 Manning became the first recipient of the Alberta Order of Excellence and, that same year, received the Order of Canada. This road was originally named Manning Freeway.
